HUDSON RIVER HOUSE
The 150 year old Victorian farm house was perfectly sited atop a great lawn, with the view down to the river framed on both sides by woods. All interior and exterior walls were removed along with some unfortunate 1960's era additions, preserving only the strong, beautifully detailed and original roof of the main house. The hillside was reconstructed with stone walls as naturally as possible to fit terraces, a pergola and an infinity edge pool, all gently curved to suggest the bend on the riverbank below. Timber framing is used in the new wing and screened porch to suggest a more utilitarian service wing.
A complex project with garage entrances on two levels and living areas carefully fitted into hip roofs to maximize the volume for living spaces, without creating the appearance of a massive structure. The main building is set into the natural grades at several levels with stone retaining walls. A later addition is expressed as a symmetrical pavilion and connected by a breezeway.
MOHAWK RIVER RESIDENCE
Because of stringent view easement restrictions, the overall height of the structure was required to be severely limited. The low-slung New England saltbox design allows views over the roof from the neighboring residence. The walk-out rear elevation fills the allowed profile with glass, maximizing the spectacular sunset view.
MULTI CAR PRIVATE GARAGE
A large detached Garage made very much larger with sweeping curves to extend the cedar roof, and is made almost column free by careful insertion of major steel structure. The large roof is broken up by eyebrow oculus dormers and copper vents to disguise the mass, and the three-quarter height stonework of the facade gives the feel of a garden structure. The round cupola creates a focal point for the sprawling building set at the forty five degree shift in geometry of the ridge.
OREGON BEACH HOUSE
A whimsical beach cottage on the Pacific Coast for repeat clients and great architecture buffs. southwest balcony and covered porch provides shelter from the relentless ocean winds.
PRIVATE LANE RESIDENCE
The original early 20th century colonial received multiple additions, including entrance porch, foyer, garage wing and family room. It also required a new entrance courtyard to create a sense of arrival from the winding private lane.
"CAPE COD" RENOVATIONS
Additions and alterations to a 1 1/2 story "cape cod" style residence, with classical detailing careful proportions and natural materials throughout, for a very discerning client. The rear of this home incorporates large expanses of European style windows and doors open out to an exquisitely landscaped property.
SARATOGA LAKE HOUSE
Shed and gable dormers play off the major gambrel roofs of this classical Shingle Style home. The First Floor spaces have cherry paneling throughout, ceilings from ten to eleven feet high and an expansively curved wall of glass in the Great Room that sweeps out to the angled Breakfast Room poised out over the lake.
RANDALL PERRY PHOTOGRAPHY
A classic early 20th Century Colonial was updated for Kitchen/Breakfast Room, Side Entrance, Terrace and Pergola and Study. A partial flat roof was created, hidden behind the new gabled Entrance and railings, so as not to disrupt the existing second floor bedroom windows. To bring light and volume into the Kitchen and Breakfast Room, an octagonal light monitor was set into the flat roof.
GOLF COURSE II
The available frontage was limited but this new home stretches back along a wide gallery to take advantage of the extensive fairway views to the south side. A central breakfast / kitchen "pavilion" and courtyard frames the view. The first floor ceilings are over ten feet in height, allowing for generous transom windows and elegant scale.
GOLF COURSE III
The program was for a large home with generous rooms, but the clients also wanted the scale and charm of a cottage. The ground floor Master Suite and major rooms all walk out onto the golf course to the rear.
CRAFTSMAN STYLE RENOVATION
The owners admire the work of Greene and Greene. A Breakfast Room, Master Bath, Sitting Bay, and a thorough interior reinterpretation throughout the main spaces in the style of the early 20th Century California architects.
ADIRONDACK GREAT CAMP
This was a design-build project by Wallant Associate Steve Janenka.
A humble but beloved family camp that was completely engulfed in new construction, and dismantled from within as the new building emerged. The project became an arts and crafts love affair for those of us working on it, with thousands of board feet of hand-worked timbers, site built steel and timber trusses, and built-ins, trim and fittings from regional hardwoods
ADIRONDACK LAKE CAMP
This is another design-build project by Steve Janenka.
The owner of this camp had personally built the original building 20 years earlier. Our work involved adding a greenhouse-bar addition to the lake front of the existing building, and a two story library and master bedroom "tower" addition, set on timber stilts to capture magnificent views. The "tower" connects back to the main house with a stair bridge. A new garage and glassed-in timber walkway, which shield the driveway from excessive winter winds and snow drifts, form a beautiful entry courtyard.
25 Arts and Crafts style luxury twinned single family town homes, carefully sited in the center of The Village of Delmar, NY. These large homes fit neatly into a highly disciplined site design. The project is located within a couple of blocks from stores and the local library, makings this a true "new-urbanism" project.
LAKE GEORGE COTTAGE
A lot of charm packed onto a postage stamp sized lot at the waters edge.
A charming cottage tucked into a gladed opening in the forest with trees carefully trimmed to frame the view of the mountains. The site is fully planted with lush, meandering flower beds. All rooms have at least two walls of windows exposure and feature double french casement windows which fully open without a center vertical post for unobstructed views.
